Defense & Tech Summit 2026 promotes SME integration in Spain

The Defense & Tech Summit 2026, held in Gijón, Spain, highlights the growing role of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) within the national defense ecosystem. During the opening of the two-day event, Colonel Carlos Sánchez Ledesma of the Ministry of Defense stated that the industry offers opportunities for a wide range of actors, including large corporations, startups, universities, and technology centers.

Susana Pascual, founder of PixelsHub and the summit, noted that while SMEs see potential in the defense sector, they often face barriers to entry. The summit aims to bridge this gap by connecting major industry leaders, such as Indra and Santa Bárbara Sistemas, with SMEs that specialize in dual-use technologies—innovations applicable to both civilian and military sectors.

Several companies are already transitioning into the defense space. For example, the Zaragoza-based technology firm Libelium is adapting its smart city solutions to support Armed Forces projects involving spectral reading for security purposes.
