Defense technology firms advance autonomous flight and swarm software

Developments in autonomous aviation and defense software are advancing through new partnerships and successful flight demonstrations.

Palladyne AI has announced a partnership with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) to integrate its Swarm OS software with Harop and Harpy flight vehicles. The decentralized software is designed to coordinate multiple systems directly at the deployment site, enabling sensor data integration and decision-making without a permanent cloud connection. This collaboration shifts Palladyne AI’s focus from individual flight control toward coordinated autonomous units. In its second quarter of 2026, Palladyne AI reported revenue of $5.78 million, a 63.50 percent increase from the first quarter, despite a net loss of $12.33 million.

Separately, Honeywell Aerospace has completed two autonomous flight demonstrations. Using the Hivemind Enterprise platform from Shield AI, the company conducted a mission in Minnesota involving a BFD-SE8 multirotor aircraft that performed autonomous takeoff, navigation, and rerouting. A subsequent demonstration near Phoenix featured two autonomous aircraft equipped with Honeywell’s o480 inertial navigation system. These aircraft successfully performed a coordinated Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) mission by autonomously exchanging target information and dividing mission tasks.
