Defense vulnerabilities identified in UK and Ireland

Recent security and operational issues in the United Kingdom and Ireland have highlighted vulnerabilities in European defense procurement and strategic planning.

In the United Kingdom, cybersecurity audits of elite maritime drones intended for Special Forces revealed that camera subsystems contained Chinese-manufactured components. These components were found to be transmitting diagnostic data, known as ‘heartbeat communications’, to servers in China without the knowledge of the Ministry of Defence.

In Ireland, the Irish Air Corps faced operational difficulties after authorities suspended contracts and restricted the use of Israeli military technology. The removal of updates for thermal and infrared sensors left aircraft unable to maneuver effectively during dense fog, impacting the fleet's ability to operate in low-visibility conditions.
