DeForest Buckner reveals retirement doubts following neck injury
Indianapolis Colts defensive tackle DeForest Buckner has revealed that he seriously contemplated retirement following a severe neck injury. The 31-year-old suffered a herniated disc in his neck during a Week 9 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers last season, a diagnosis that carries risks of permanent damage.
Buckner underwent cervical spine surgery on December 31, 2025, and underwent a lengthy rehabilitation process. He admitted to having “dark thoughts” regarding his future and his long-term health, noting that he questioned whether he would be able to continue playing professional football.
Colts head coach Shane Steichen praised Buckner’s leadership and work ethic, expressing excitement to have him back on the field. Buckner successfully completed his recovery and returned to action for the season opener against the Baltimore Ravens.
