Dehydration poses significant risks to cardiovascular health

Dehydration can significantly increase the workload on the heart and affect the cardiovascular system by reducing blood volume. According to cardiologist Brodie Marthaler of the Mayo Clinic Health System, as fluid loss occurs, less blood returns to the heart with each beat, forcing the body to narrow blood vessels and increase heart rate to maintain circulation.

Symptoms of advancing dehydration include rapid heartbeat or palpitations, fatigue, dizziness, lightheadedness, vision changes, difficulty breathing, and chest discomfort. Severe cases can lead to heatstroke or fainting, which are considered medical emergencies requiring immediate attention.

High-risk groups include older adults, children, athletes, outdoor workers, and individuals with pre-existing heart conditions. People taking certain medications, such as diuretics or GLP-1 receptor agonists, are also at increased risk. To prevent complications, specialists recommend maintaining adequate fluid intake and monitoring signs such as dry mouth, dry skin, and dark urine.
