PPC and Amazon to develop data center in Kozani, Greece

PPC and Amazon Web Services (AWS) have entered into a cooperation agreement to develop a data center in Kozani, Greece. The project is set to be located on the site of the decommissioned Agios Dimitrios lignite power plant, following approval from the Ministry of Environment and Energy for the plant's decommissioning plan.

Under the agreement, PPC will provide the necessary land, buildings, and energy infrastructure, while AWS will lease the facility for a 15-year period. The project's first phase is planned to have an initial capacity of 300 MW, which is expected to employ between 400 and 500 specialized workers. There are long-term prospects to expand the facility's capacity up to 1 GW, which could potentially support up to 1,500 employees.

Government Vice President Kostis Hatzidakis described the investment as a global leader in its field and a significant step for Greece's energy transition. The development is part of a broader strategic plan to transform Western Macedonia from a lignite-dependent region into a hub for digital and renewable energy infrastructure.
