Deir ez-Zor landmine explosion kills and injures civilians

A landmine explosion in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor killed and injured several civilians, including children, on Monday. The incident occurred in the Faydat Ibn Muwayni area within the Al-Mayadin desert when a landmine detonated near a vehicle.

Reports indicate that the victims included a woman and three children from two local families. While the exact number of fatalities and injuries remains unconfirmed by independent sources, the explosion highlights the ongoing danger of unexploded ordnance in the region. Deir ez-Zor remains one of the most heavily contaminated areas in Syria due to over a decade of conflict.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights has documented that at least 3,799 civilians, including 1,000 children and 377 women, have been killed by landmines and cluster munitions in Syria since March 2011. Since the fall of the previous regime on December 8, 2024, the network has recorded 329 civilian deaths from similar incidents, noting an increase in accidents as displaced persons return to their homes and resume agricultural activities.
