Delaware and Ohio promote specialized fire alert devices for deaf communities

In observance of Deaf Awareness Month, fire safety officials in Delaware and Ohio are highlighting the necessity of specialized alert systems for the deaf and hard of hearing community. Standard audible smoke and carbon monoxide alarms may fail to wake individuals who cannot hear them, creating a significant safety vulnerability.

In Delaware, the Office for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and the State Fire Marshal’s Office have launched the Accessibility Equipment Program under House Bill 53. This initiative provides visual and tactile equipment, such as strobe lights, flash receivers, and vibrating bed shakers, to eligible residents to ensure they receive immediate warnings during emergencies.

Similarly, the Ohio Department of Commerce’s Division of the State Fire Marshal is promoting alternative devices that use visual screens or tactile vibrations. In some jurisdictions, such as Delaware, these life-saving tools may be available free of charge through community safety partnerships and grant funding via local fire departments.
