Delaware judge limits Macron defamation lawsuit against Candace Owens

A Delaware Superior Court judge has dismissed personal liability claims against American commentator Candace Owens in a defamation lawsuit brought by French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron. Judge Sheldon K. Rennie ruled that the court lacks personal jurisdiction over Owens because she resides in Tennessee.

However, the legal action will proceed against two of Owens' corporate entities, Candace Owens LLC and GeorgeTom Inc., which are registered in Delaware. The lawsuit, filed in July 2025, alleges that Owens used her podcast to spread false claims regarding Brigitte Macron’s identity to increase her own notoriety and financial gain.

The court must still determine the applicable statute of limitations. The judge is evaluating whether French law, which typically enforces a strict three-month filing window for defamation, or Delaware law should apply. If the shorter French timeframe is upheld, the entire case could face dismissal.
