Delaware offers free private well water testing for PFAS

The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) and the Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) have launched a statewide program providing free testing for private well water. The initiative aims to identify per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and other contaminants in drinking water.

Because private wells are not regulated under the federal Safe Drinking Water Act, residents are typically responsible for their own testing and maintenance. This program supports Delaware’s 2026 PFAS Implementation Plan to expand testing access. There is no cost to residents for sampling or laboratory analysis.

Upon submitting a request and consent form, applicants will be contacted within two weeks to schedule an appointment. If contaminants are found above threshold levels, the DHSS Division of Public Health will notify the resident within 24 to 48 hours. Additionally, DHSS offers assistance programs for low-income households to help cover the costs of installing and maintaining water mitigation devices.
