Delaware River recovery effort underway after woman rescues child
A search for a woman who disappeared in the Delaware River has transitioned into a recovery effort. The incident occurred at Amico Island Park in Delran, New Jersey, near Rancocas Creek.
According to officials, the woman entered the water around 4 p.m. on Monday to assist a 9-year-old girl who was struggling in the current. The woman successfully pushed the child toward the shore, where bystanders were able to pull her to safety. However, the woman went under the water and did not resurface.
First responders resumed the search on Tuesday morning using drones equipped with sonar and thermal technology, alongside personnel in the water. The Delran Fire Department noted that the river currents in the area are exceptionally strong, comparable to ocean rip currents. Amico Island Park remains closed while the operation continues.
