Venezuela's Acting President Delcy Rodríguez Leads Earthquake Recovery
Twin earthquakes struck Venezuela on 24 June 2026, damaging more than 13 000 homes across the country. Acting President Delcy Rodríguez has overseen a large‑scale reconstruction programme, delivering 272 homes – 212 rehabilitated houses in Caracas and 60 new apartments in La Guaira – and pledging to repair over 13 000 dwellings for roughly 66 000 people.
The government reports that 47 369 housing and infrastructure inspections have been completed, classifying 58 % of the structures as safe (green), 23 % as requiring further work (yellow) and 19 % as high‑risk (red). Community brigades and state agencies are mobilised under the Plan Venezuela Renace to carry out the repairs.
Electricity restoration is also underway. Inspections of the Planta Centro and Termocarabobo thermoelectric plants show that about 50 % of Termocarabobo’s generating capacity has been restored, part of a broader effort to boost the National Electric System ahead of the expected El Niño drought. A U.S. Embassy delegation inspected the Simón Bolívar (Guri) hydroelectric dam, prompting criticism from Venezuelan officials.
Financing challenges persist: high legal‑reserve requirements limit bank credit for reconstruction, and officials warn that low incomes further constrain access to loans for rebuilding households.
