Delfin heirs face legal dispute over failed 10 billion euro deal

A legal dispute is unfolding within Delfin, the family holding company of the late Leonardo Del Vecchio, as heirs face significant financial and governance challenges. A Luxembourg judge is expected to rule on a request to extend pre-emption rights for six months regarding the holdings of Leonardo Maria Del Vecchio, Clemente Del Vecchio, and Rocco Basilico.

The conflict stems from a failed attempt by Leonardo Maria Del Vecchio to acquire a 25% stake from his siblings, Luca and Paola Del Vecchio, in a deal valued at 10 billion euros. The transaction failed to close due to a lack of necessary bank financing. Because the contract lacked a clause subordinating the purchase to successful financing, Leonardo Maria may face a penalty of 500 million euros, split equally between the two sellers.

In response to reports regarding his financial standing, Lmdv Capital clarified that Leonardo Maria Del Vecchio’s total exposures, including personal credit lines and corporate positions, amount to 950 million euros. The company noted that no positions are currently overdue or dishonored. The dispute remains centered on the succession process initiated after Leonardo Del Vecchio’s death in June 2022 and the future governance of the family holding.
