Delfland enforces water extraction ban, no exemption for Westland greenhouse growers
The Hoogheemraadschap van Delfland will implement a water‑extraction ban on Wednesday, refusing any exemption for greenhouse growers in the Westland and Oostland regions. The board will keep all sluices closed along the river that flows into the North Sea to prevent salt‑water intrusion and will deploy hand‑enforcers to monitor compliance.
Glastuinbouw Nederland warns that more than 150 soil‑based growers could run out of water within two to three weeks, with only about 10 % having alternative supplies. The association estimates potential damage of up to €150 million and has suggested using treated sewage water or, if necessary, salt water to keep the irrigation basins filled. Delfland officials say the measures are essential to avoid irreversible damage, but will consider the growers’ proposals only as a last resort.
