Delfland water authorities investigate emergency supplies for greenhouse sector

The Hoogheemraadschap van Delfland and Glastuinbouw Nederland (GTNL) are investigating emergency water supply options for the greenhouse horticulture sector due to persistent drought. Delfland has declared a ‘code black’ status, prioritizing freshwater for dike stability and public safety, which has resulted in extraction bans for other uses.

Approximately 130 companies fear losing their crops if the drought continues for another two weeks. To mitigate this, three technical solutions are being evaluated: transporting fresh surface water via tankers from outside the region, installing a temporary desalination plant at the Nieuwe Waterweg, and using additional purified sewage water for horticulture.

GTNL is leading the research and covering the costs. While some growers have managed by using private water basins or sharing resources, the sector is awaiting permission from authorities to implement these emergency measures, with hopes to begin operations by the end of the week.
