Delhaize invests €120 million in Belgian logistics and sustainability

Delhaize is undertaking significant expansions to its logistics and sustainability initiatives in Belgium. The retailer has announced a €120 million investment in its logistics operations to accommodate future volume growth in Belgium and Luxembourg. This investment includes the construction of a new distribution center for fresh products at the existing Zellik site, managed by Delhaize and built by real estate group WDP, with an expected opening in 2029. Additionally, the company is investing in existing facilities and a new transport center in Zellik, which is slated to open in the summer of 2027. These developments are expected to create 130 new permanent jobs.

In tandem with these infrastructure upgrades, Delhaize is expanding its circular economy efforts by introducing reusable shopping crates for in-store customers. Following the successful implementation of reusable folding crates for e-commerce—which has already saved approximately 1,205 tons of cardboard annually—customers can now purchase sturdy, reusable crates at checkout to reduce reliance on single-use shopping bags.
