Delhi air quality hits 83-day high amid rising pollution levels
Delhi’s air quality has seen a recent deterioration, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching 187 on October 4, the highest level recorded in 83 days. While the overall city average remains in the moderate category, several monitoring stations, including Mundka and Narela, have reported air quality in the poor category.
Research from the University of Delhi highlights the health implications of this pollution. A study published in ‘Frontiers in Sustainable Cities’ found that average winter PM2.5 concentrations reached 269.35 micrograms per cubic metre, nearly seven times the national standard. The study suggests that prolonged exposure to these fine particles, combined with factors like stress and physical inactivity, could lead to a 1.65-fold increase in cardiopulmonary mortality risk among young adults.
Contributing factors to the rising pollution include declining wind speeds, lack of rainfall, and localized emissions. Additionally, the Indian Agricultural Research Institute reported 203 stubble-burning incidents across Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh between September 15 and October 3.
