Delhi and North India see pre‑monsoon storms as monsoon arrival delayed

The Indian Meteorological Department has revised its monsoon outlook, expecting the seasonal rains to reach Delhi and the broader North Indian region in the first week of July rather than late June. In the meantime, a pre‑monsoon spell of thunderstorms and light rain is forecast for June 27‑28 across Delhi‑NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan and nearby states. Winds of 50‑60 km/h are expected, bringing a noticeable temperature drop and temporary relief from the intense heat and humidity that have plagued the area.

Officials attribute the delayed onset to the absence of a low‑pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, which typically propels the monsoon westward. The department warned of possible gusty winds, hail and localized flooding in the warned districts and urged residents to stay cautious while the pre‑monsoon activity continues.

Temperatures in Delhi are projected to fall from highs of around 40 °C on June 27 to the mid‑30s by early July as cloud cover and intermittent rain persist, offering brief respite to the capital’s residents.
