Eight engineering students killed in Kerala highway crash
Eight engineering students from Tamil Nadu were killed in a high-speed car collision on National Highway 66 in the Thrissur district of Kerala. The accident occurred around 11:40 PM on Friday near Panambikunnu in Kaipamangalam. The car, which was traveling from Guruvayur toward Kodungallur, slammed into the rear of a stationary goods lorry that was parked on the side of the road near a construction diversion.
The impact was so severe that the vehicle was completely mangled, forcing rescue teams to use specialized equipment to cut through the metal to extricate the victims. Seven occupants died at the scene, while the eighth succumbed to injuries at a hospital. The deceased are identified as students of PSNA College of Engineering and Technology in Dindigul.
Authorities have registered a case against the lorry driver, who is reported to have gone into hiding. The lorry involved was registered in Maharashtra. The incident has prompted calls for safety audits of national highways in Kerala, particularly in areas where road construction is ongoing and heavy vehicles are parked near diversions.
