Delhi CM launches sanitation and waste management initiative

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has launched a major sanitation drive to address the city's waste management challenges. With Delhi generating approximately 15,000 metric tonnes of waste daily—of which only 6,000 to 7,000 tonnes were previously processed—the initiative aims to bridge the processing gap through long-term infrastructure planning.

As part of the rollout, over 500 vehicles for door-to-door waste collection were introduced, including auto-tippers, e-rickshaws, and refuse compactors. The government also announced the deployment of 1,000 battery-operated mechanical litter-picking machines across all 250 Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) wards to clean roads and public spaces.

To support these operations, the government has appointed 35 women drivers for waste collection vehicles. Future plans include the establishment of new waste-to-energy plants, e-waste centres, and biogas plants to enhance the city's processing capacity.
