Delhi CM Rekha Gupta inspects Okhla landfill to review waste clearance
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inspected the Okhla landfill site to review progress on waste disposal and land reclamation efforts. Gupta stated that the government has cleared 100 acres of land across Delhi’s three major landfill sites over the last 1.5 years, with significant portions being converted into green spaces.
During the inspection, Gupta noted that waste accumulated prior to January 2025 has largely been processed. The government is currently working to manage the 3,000 to 4,000 metric tons of fresh waste generated daily to prevent the formation of new garbage mountains. To support these efforts, Gupta laid the foundation stone for new waste processing plants at Okhla, Ghazipur, and Singhola, as well as a biogas facility at Ghazipur.
Reports indicate that approximately 70 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste have been biomined at the Okhla site, freeing up nearly 35 acres of land. The Chief Minister expressed a goal to eliminate the remaining garbage mounds by the end of the year, describing the operation as being conducted in ‘mission mode’ to ensure the city is freed from waste mountains.
