Global natural gas demand hits record high amid rising fuel costs

Global natural gas demand reached a record 4,202 billion cubic metres (bcm) in 2025, representing a 1.7 percent increase from the previous year. According to the Global Gas Report 2026 by the International Gas Union and Snam, global LNG trade also hit a record 580 bcm. Asia experienced the highest regional demand growth, increasing by 25 bcm.

In India, energy costs have risen significantly as of September 1, 2026. Aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices for domestic airlines increased by 5.46 percent to INR 121.28 per litre. Additionally, Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) implemented price hikes in Mumbai, raising CNG prices by INR 2 per kg to INR 88 per kg and domestic piped natural gas (PNG) prices by INR 1 per standard cubic meter (SCM).

These price adjustments are attributed to rising input costs and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which have impacted global energy markets and increased the reliance on expensive imported spot regasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG).
