Delhi Fire Services and MCD Blamed for Lapses in Deadly Palam Fire

A magisterial inquiry into the Palam fire that occurred on 18 March 2026 found nine fatalities, including seven women, and three injuries. The report, submitted to the Home Department, identified serious lapses by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the Delhi Fire Services (DFS), citing regulatory failures, unauthorised overhead cables, and violations of fire‑safety norms.

The most probable cause was an electrical short circuit near an MCB box, while large stores of combustible cosmetic products accelerated the blaze. The inquiry also noted inadequate training of the Assistant Electrical Inspector, a malfunctioning Skylift crane, and the lack of alternative high‑rise rescue equipment, which delayed rescue efforts. The Delhi Government has pledged corrective measures, additional personnel, and upgraded equipment for the fire services.
