India food safety authorities conduct raids ahead of Diwali
Food safety departments across several Indian states have intensified inspections and raids to prevent food adulteration ahead of the Diwali festival. In Delhi, authorities destroyed 922 kg of adulterated or spoiled food items, including rasgullas, chhena, and milk cake, following inspections of sweet-making units in Nihal Vihar and the Mori Gate khoya market. Officials also seized over 322 kg of ghee from retail stores in the capital to ensure compliance with labeling and safety regulations.
In Rajasthan, a joint operation by the Sikar police and the Food Safety Department led to the destruction of approximately 200 kg of adulterated Kalakand and the arrest of two individuals in Neem Ka Thana. Meanwhile, in Maharashtra, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena has called on food and drug administrations to conduct rigorous inspections of hotels, sweet shops, and warehouses to protect public health from substandard or expired products.
Other regional actions include inspections in Telangana, where the TG SAFE authority reviewed 53 establishments, and in Bihar, where over 500 food establishments have been inspected to ensure the availability of safe, high-quality food products during the festive season.
