Chandni Chowk Town Hall to become Global Heritage Centre

The Delhi government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to redevelop the historic Town Hall complex in Chandni Chowk into a ‘Global Heritage Centre’. The project involves the Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC) and aims to transform the Grade-I heritage site, which includes the Town Hall, Press Building, and an adjoining park, into a hub for museums, cultural activities, and tourism.

Built between 1860 and 1866, the 12,180-square-metre complex previously served as the MCD headquarters until 2010. The redevelopment plan focuses on adaptive reuse, ensuring the architectural and heritage character of the structures is preserved while making them functional for modern tourism. The DTTDC will conduct surveys and prepare a Detailed Project Report, with potential development through public investment or public-private partnerships. The MoU is set for an initial 30-year term, with the possibility of a 30-year extension.
