Delhi government plans new excise policy to adjust liquor prices

The Delhi government is preparing to notify a new excise policy, likely in October, which may lead to increased liquor prices for consumers. The policy aims to boost government revenue through adjustments to excise duty rates and retail margins.

The final draft of the policy is reportedly ready. Before implementation, the proposal must be sent to the Delhi Cabinet and Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu for approval. This process is expected to move forward once a new Excise Commissioner is appointed following the recent transfer of Ravi Jha to Arunachal Pradesh.

Key changes under the proposed policy include potential revisions to the fixed retail margins charged at government-owned liquor stores and an increase in the number of premium liquor outlets. While the policy may affect the availability and pricing of imported spirits, private players are unlikely to be permitted to enter the retail sector. Additionally, officials have indicated that the service timings for liquor at hotels, clubs, and restaurants could be revised.
