Delhi High Court increases judge strength to 50 with seven new appointments
The Delhi High Court's working strength has increased to 50 judges following the swearing-in of seven judicial officers on Monday. Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya administered the oath of office to the new appointees at a ceremony held on the court premises.
Of the seven new judges, Nivedita Anil Sharma and Nisha Sahay Saxena have been appointed as permanent judges, while Sanjay Sharma, Bharat Parashar, Aditi Choudhary, Dinesh Bhatt, and Arun Bhardwaj have been appointed as additional judges. These appointments follow recommendations from the Supreme Court Collegium and were notified by the central government on September 19.
The new judges were elevated from the Delhi district judiciary and judicial administration. For instance, Arun Bhardwaj previously served as the Registrar General of the Delhi High Court, and Bharat Parashar served as the Secretary General at the Supreme Court.
The addition of these judges brings the court to 83% of its sanctioned strength of 60 (comprising 45 permanent and 15 additional judges). This increase is expected to assist the court in handling a rising volume of commercial matters and improving case disposal rates.
