Delhi High Court denies stay on release of film Doosra
The Delhi High Court has refused to stay the theatrical release of the film ‘Doosra’, scheduled for October 23. The decision follows a legal challenge brought by former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly, who alleged that the production infringes upon his personality and commercial rights.
Ganguly and Luv Films LLP argued that the film unauthorizedly exploits his identity and career highlights, specifically referencing his leadership of the Indian cricket team and his iconic shirtless celebration following the 2002 NatWest Series final at Lord’s. The petitioners expressed concern that the film’s promotional campaign could mislead audiences into believing Ganguly endorsed the project.
The legal dispute also involves contractual exclusivity. Ganguly and Luv Films stated they had an agreement dating back to August 2021 for the development of an authorized biopic, ‘Dada – The Sourav Ganguly Story’, which is slated for a 2027 release. Justice Dinesh Bhatt clarified that while the film’s release would proceed, the court would continue to hear arguments regarding the plea.
