Delhi High Court directs CBFC to decide on Mirzapur: The Movie song replacement

The Delhi High Court has directed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to make a decision within one week regarding a proposal to modify the film ‘Mirzapur: The Movie’. The makers of the film have proposed replacing the song ‘Shoorveer’ with background music during the film’s climax.

The directive follows a public interest litigation filed by Prashant Kumar Singh. The petition expresses concern that ‘Shoorveer’, a song composed by Rapperiya Baalam as a tribute to Maharana Pratap, is being used in a sequence featuring gangsters and criminal activities. The petitioner argues that using a song associated with the ideals of Maharana Pratap—such as honor and sacrifice—within a context of organized crime, violence, and drugs could create an undesirable association.

The petitioner clarified that the challenge is not directed at the depiction of crime or violence in cinema, nor does it involve copyright or licensing issues. Instead, the plea focuses on compliance with film certification guidelines under the Cinematograph Act, 1952, specifically regarding the potential glorification of anti-social activities.
