Delhi High Court judge recuses from Gymkhana Club eviction case

Justice Prateek Jalan of the Delhi High Court has recused himself from hearing a legal challenge brought by the Delhi Gymkhana Club Staff Welfare Association regarding the eviction of the club from its Lutyens' Delhi premises. Justice Jalan cited personal involvement, stating, “I would be more comfortable if somebody else hears this.”

The dispute centers on a 27.3-acre site on Safdarjung Road, which the club has occupied under a perpetual lease since 1928. The Central Government terminated this lease in May 2024, asserting that the land is required for “strengthening and securing of defence infrastructure,” governance facilities, and other vital public security purposes due to its proximity to high-security installations.

Legal actions have been initiated by club members and staff to challenge the termination and seek protection for their livelihoods. While the Centre previously indicated it would not take immediate coercive action, the club's management has faced show-cause notices for eviction. The matter is expected to be listed before a different bench.
