Delhi High Court Orders Pilot Sterilisation and Vaccination Camp for Stray Dogs

The Delhi High Court directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) to identify a ward each and set up a pilot camp for sterilising and vaccinating stray dogs. The bench, comprising Justices Dinesh Mehta and Rajnish Kumar Gupta, ordered that the initiative be carried out in consultation with amicus curiae Gauri Maulekhi and that extensive publicity clarify that dogs will not be captured, sent to pounds, or killed; the public may bring dogs to the camp for treatment.

The court noted an estimated eight lakh stray dogs in the capital, though no official census exists, and discussed possibilities such as micro‑chipping. Officials indicated that several Animal Birth Control centres have been identified, with pending approvals for three zones, and that sterilisation work for those zones is being handled by centres in other zones.
