Delhi Jal Board approves ₹17,970 crore sewerage reform plan

The Delhi Jal Board has granted in-principle approval for a massive 10-year, ₹17,969.93 crore sewerage improvement plan. A central feature of this initiative is the ‘one zone, one operator’ model, which will divide Delhi into eight zones. Under this system, a single operator will be responsible for the entire sewerage network within their assigned zone, including sewer lines, manholes, pumping stations, and complaint resolution.

The plan aims to increase accountability through geo-tagged inspections, real-time monitoring via a central command center, and a commitment to 100% mechanical and robotic sewer cleaning. Operator payments will be linked to performance to ensure rapid response to overflows and complaints.

In addition to sewerage reforms, the Board approved a ₹6,044.05 crore project to overhaul the water supply system in South Delhi, covering 12 assembly constituencies and approximately 244,381 domestic consumers. This project will utilize smart meters and sensors for real-time monitoring. Furthermore, the Board has authorized tenders for 13 new Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) with a total capacity of 328 MGD, estimated at ₹7,373 crore, to be developed under NMCG funding.
