Delhi man diagnosed with rare PMDS condition during infertility evaluation

A man in Delhi, aged between 24 and 26, has been diagnosed with Persistent Müllerian Duct Syndrome (PMDS) after seeking treatment for infertility. The medical discovery occurred at RG Hospitals in Rajouri Garden after tests revealed azoospermia, the absence of sperm in semen.

Despite having typical male physical characteristics and an XY chromosomal pattern, imaging via ultrasound and MRI revealed a well-formed, albeit underdeveloped, uterus and fallopian-tube-like structures inside his body. Additionally, both testes were found to be undescended, located within the abdomen rather than the scrotum.

PMDS is an extremely rare congenital disorder where Müllerian structures persist despite male chromosomal development. Medical literature reports fewer than 300 cases. Due to the patient's age, the long-standing nature of the undescended testes, and an increased risk of testicular cancer, doctors performed laparoscopic surgery to remove the abnormal Müllerian structures and both testes.
