DTC bus strike in Delhi enters third day, disrupting city transport

A strike by Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) contractual drivers has entered its third day, significantly disrupting public transportation for approximately 6 million daily commuters. Drivers are protesting for higher daily wages, better medical facilities, and overtime payments, noting that their current daily wage of ₹862 is comparable to manual laborers.

Major bus depots, including Rajghat, Rani Khera, and Nehru Place, have been heavily affected. The disruption has forced commuters to rely on expensive alternatives like auto-rickshaws, with some reporting fare hikes from ₹20 to over ₹100. Delhi Airport has also issued a travel advisory due to potential connectivity issues.

In response to the shortage of buses, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has increased its services, adding 20 extra train trips across the network to accommodate the surge in passengers. Transport Minister Pankaj Singh has appealed to drivers to end the strike, stating that most demands have been addressed and remaining issues regarding salary increases will be discussed with the labor department.
