Delhi Metro to add 20 weekday trips to combat rising pollution
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has announced it will operate 20 additional train trips on weekdays, starting October 22, to encourage public transport use as air quality in the national capital deteriorates. This move follows the enforcement of Stage 1 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) due to the Air Quality Index entering the 'poor' category.
In addition to increasing service, the DMRC is intensifying anti-pollution measures at its construction sites and surrounding areas. These efforts include clearing road dust, removing garbage from footpaths and medians, and ensuring construction materials are properly covered. The corporation has also deployed over 250 anti-smog and mist guns at stations, office buildings, and construction sites.
To further mitigate dust, DMRC engineers will inspect wheel-washing facilities for vehicles exiting construction zones. The corporation also manages approximately 31 kilometers of city roads under its temporary jurisdiction for construction purposes, most of which have been repaired to prevent dust from damaged surfaces.
