Delhi Police arrest 11 in international digital arrest scam
Delhi Police have dismantled an international cybercrime syndicate following a digital arrest scam that defrauded a 69-year-old retired scientist, Pradeep Kumar Das, of ₹1.25 crore. Das, a former director in the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, reported that fraudsters impersonating officials from the Delhi Police, Anti-Terrorism Squad, and the National Investigation Agency threatened him with arrest over alleged money laundering. The suspects allegedly kept him under continuous video surveillance while coercing him to transfer funds via RTGS.
The investigation led to the arrest of 11 individuals and the discovery of a network using specialized mobile applications to forward one-time passwords (OTPs) and SMS messages to handlers in Cambodia and other Southeast Asian countries. Police also identified links to 78 separate complaints on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, involving an estimated ₹73 crore.
In a related development, the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit secured ₹7.25 crore in a separate digital arrest case involving a 79-year-old man in Andhra Pradesh. Authorities have also placed holds on ₹1.96 crore in bank accounts linked to ongoing fraud investigations.
