Delhi Police deny protest permission and issue new conduct guidelines
Delhi Police has heightened security around Shah Auditorium and Jantar Mantar following social media posts calling for protests against the UGC Equity Regulations (2026) and the reservation system. Authorities clarified that no permission has been granted for any gatherings or protests at these locations on August 23, 2026, labeling the social media claims as false and misleading.
Prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the BNSS are currently in force in the New Delhi District, strictly prohibiting assemblies of five or more persons, including protest marches and demonstrations. The police warned that legal action may be taken against individuals who create or disseminate fake information.
In a separate development, the Delhi Police has issued new conduct guidelines for its personnel. Following viral videos of officers during previous protests, staff have been instructed to remain calm and avoid engaging in conversations or responding to emotional appeals from protesters to prevent their reactions from being used as social media content.
