Delhi Police face allegations of journalist harassment

Three female journalists have filed complaints against Delhi Police following allegations of manhandling and sexual harassment during a protest in New Delhi on October 3. One independent journalist, Rosy, specifically accused Assistant Commissioner of Police Vivek Bhagat of inappropriate touching while she was reporting on the detention of AISA president Neha Bora.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Neha Yadav confirmed that the complaints have been registered, medical examinations have been conducted, and the matter has been referred to the Crime Branch. Additionally, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of the situation.

Several press organizations, including the Press Club of India and the Delhi Union of Journalists, have submitted a memorandum to the Delhi Police Commissioner demanding an immediate FIR and an impartial judicial inquiry. The press bodies criticized the lack of action and reported that a promotion for ACP Bhagat was initially processed before being put on hold following the outcry.
