Delhi PWD to receive independent engineering cadre

The Indian central government has approved a proposal by the Delhi government to establish an independent engineering cadre for the Delhi Public Works Department (PWD). This decision ends a nearly 30-year period of administrative dependence on the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) for engineering services.

Under the new arrangement, 3,214 sanctioned engineering posts across 36 categories will be separated from the CPWD and brought under the independent Delhi PWD Engineering Cadre. The move is intended to provide the capital with greater control over its engineering workforce, allowing for faster filling of vacancies and more responsive decision-making regarding local infrastructure.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta described the approval as a historic step toward developing the city into a world-class capital. The new cadre is expected to accelerate infrastructure projects and improve the monitoring of the construction and maintenance of roads, bridges, and public buildings.
