Delhi Race Club land seized by authorities near Prime Minister's residence

Authorities have taken possession of 53.242 acres of land near the Race Course area in New Delhi, close to the Prime Minister's residence. The property, formerly occupied by the Delhi Race Club, has been handed over to the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) for care and maintenance.

The takeover follows a court decision dismissing the Delhi Race Club's application for an interim stay on an eviction order issued on August 11, 2026. The court noted that the club's lease has not been renewed since 1994 and that the institution failed to provide evidence or responses during previous proceedings. The eviction was conducted under the Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Act.

Demolition work has already commenced at the site, with bulldozers razing historic structures including stables, the bookmakers’ ring, and the saddling enclosure. Approximately 200 of the club's 250 horses have been returned to their owners, with the remaining horses expected to be moved by September 14.
