Delhi Police seeks extension of CAPF deployment amid protest fears

Delhi Police has requested the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to extend the deployment of 273 companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in the national capital until October 20, 2026. The request aims to maintain security amid fears of prolonged demonstrations and potential law-and-order challenges.

Protests are expected from the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), the Bhim Army, student organizations, and other political groups. These demonstrations are reportedly linked to allegations of irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and demands for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Authorities have identified sensitive locations for potential assembly, including Jantar Mantar, Parliament House, India Gate, and the Election Commission of India headquarters.

While 301 CAPF companies were initially approved for deployment, 28 of the 80 companies sanctioned on October 8 had not reported to Delhi Police by October 12. Additionally, the central government has extended the stay of approximately 11,000 personnel who were originally scheduled to depart on October 12, citing the developing security situation.
