Delhi teenager undergoes high-risk bariatric surgery at 275 kg

A 16-year-old boy in Delhi has successfully undergone a high-risk laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. The teenager weighed approximately 275 kg and had a body mass index (BMI) approaching 100.

Before the procedure, the patient suffered from severe obstructive sleep apnoea, breathing difficulties, and extensive skin infections. Due to his size, he had to be transported to the hospital in a Matador rather than a conventional vehicle. He required nearly two weeks of treatment in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) to stabilize his condition.

A multidisciplinary team of nearly 20 specialists, including experts in pediatric critical care, cardiology, and gastroenterology, evaluated the risks associated with the surgery. The procedure was performed by a surgical team including Dr. Daksh Sethi, Dr. Sudhir Kalhan, Dr. Mukund Khetan, and Dr. Suviraj John. Following the surgery, the teenager reportedly lost nearly 50 kg within two months.
