India Meteorological Department issues heavy rain and thunderstorm alerts for Mumbai and Delhi

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued orange and red alerts for Mumbai, Palghar and Delhi-NCR as the southwest monsoon intensified across Maharashtra and the capital region. In Mumbai, heavy rain caused widespread waterlogging, the Andheri underpass was flooded and shut to traffic, and the city recorded 113 tree‑fall incidents. Despite the conditions, suburban rail services and most subways remained operational.

Across Maharashtra, the IMD placed 31 districts under yellow or orange alerts, forecasting continued heavy showers, thunderstorms and strong winds. Residents were advised to monitor updates and take precautions. In Delhi‑NCR, a thunderstorm alert warned of lightning, gusty winds up to 50 km/h and poor air quality, with AQI readings ranging from moderate to poor.

The monsoon activity was expected to bring relief from the summer heat, with temperatures projected to fall by a few degrees. Authorities urged caution as flooding, road jams and transport disruptions could occur in low‑lying areas.
