Delhi protests over election integrity cause metro closures and mass detentions
The INDIA Alliance opposition coalition has launched a march toward the Supreme Court in Delhi, demanding action against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations of ‘vote theft’ and issues regarding voter list reforms. The protests have led to significant disruptions in the capital, including the closure of entry and exit gates at six major Delhi Metro stations—Patel Chowk, Janpath, Rajiv Chowk, Mandi House, Central Secretariat, and Barakhamba Road—between 6:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
Security measures have intensified, with reports indicating that over 7,000 individuals, including former Chief Ministers and students, were detained to prevent unauthorized demonstrations at Jantar Mantar. The unrest has also impacted transportation, with over 250 trains cancelled and widespread traffic diversions.
Abhijit Dipke, founder of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), has leveled harsh criticisms against the Delhi Police, accusing them of inhumanity and acting as ‘thugs in uniform’ following his arrest. Despite the heavy police presence and detentions, protest leaders have announced intentions to continue demonstrations until the Chief Election Commissioner resigns.
