Delhi-NCR heavy rains trigger red alerts and flight disruptions
Heavy monsoon rains have caused widespread disruption across the Delhi-NCR region, leading to severe waterlogging and traffic congestion in major areas such as Connaught Place, AIIMS, and ITO. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for several districts in New Delhi, warning of continued heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds.
Air travel at Indira Gandhi International Airport has been significantly impacted. Reports indicate that 16 flights were cancelled and 123 flights experienced delays, while at least 15 flights were diverted to cities including Jaipur, Chandigarh, and Lucknow. Major airlines, including IndiGo, Air India, SpiceJet, and Akasa Air, have issued passenger advisories regarding potential schedule alterations.
In neighboring Gurugram, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) issued a work-from-home advisory for corporate offices, government institutions, and schools to mitigate traffic congestion caused by flooding. An orange alert was also issued for Gurugram and Faridabad.
