Delhi Welcomes Delayed Monsoon Arrival, Temperatures Drop Significantly

The South‑West monsoon entered Delhi after a five‑day delay, bringing light to moderate rain that broke the weeks‑long heatwave. The Indian Meteorological Department issued a yellow alert for the capital, forecasting continued cloud cover and intermittent showers. Temperatures fell sharply, with daytime highs around 32‑33 °C and overnight lows dropping to about 22 °C, providing noticeable relief from previous heat‑stress conditions.

Meteorologists expect the monsoon trough to shift northward by early July, leading to heavier downpours from 5 July onward across Delhi and surrounding northern plains. The IMD also warned that the system will move into other parts of northern India and subsequently bring heavy rainfall to western and central coastal regions, prompting red alerts in those areas. This marks the first July monsoon arrival for Delhi since 2021, a rare occurrence in the city’s 125‑year weather record.
