Delhi Zoo modernization plan adds habitat-themed enclosures and rescue centre

The National Zoological Park in Delhi has unveiled a overhaul that will transform the 188‑acre campus into a model urban zoo for India and Asia. The proposal calls for 38 new habitat‑based enclosures, the demolition of 11 aging structures and upgrades to 32 existing ones, aiming to house a curated collection of 201 species. A dedicated rescue and rehabilitation centre, a nocturnal house, reptile house, butterfly garden and specialised aviaries are also part of the design.

A multidisciplinary consultancy, estimated at Rs 3.78 crore, will conduct baseline studies and prepare a detailed master plan meeting Central Zoo Authority standards. The plan includes sustainable waste and water‑management systems, revitalised ponds, green‑space restoration and biodiversity trails linking the zoo with nearby heritage sites such as Purana Qila, creating a cultural and wildlife corridor.

Key species slated for new or upgraded habitats include tigers, lions, giraffes, rhinos, elephants, chimpanzees, cheetahs, jaguars, otters, and African oryx, among others, enhancing animal welfare and visitor experience.
