Delhi's peak electricity demand hits record 8,748 MW amid heatwave

On Monday, June 29 2026, Delhi’s State Load Dispatch Centre recorded a peak power demand of 8,748 megawatts (MW) at 15:17, surpassing the previous all‑time high of 8,656 MW set on June 19 2024. The demand rose sharply during the intense heatwave, with the city’s load crossing the 8,000 MW mark three times in June (8,434 MW on June 10, 8,296 MW on June 11 and the new record on June 29). Experts warn that continued high temperatures could push the city’s peak demand beyond 9,000 MW.

Power distributors such as BSE S Ltd (BRPL) and BSE Yamuna Ltd (BYPL) supplied 3,906 MW and 1,876 MW respectively, while Tata Power‑DDL met a company‑specific peak of 2,497 MW. The grid is being supported by roughly 2,670 MW of green energy—including solar, hydro, wind, pumped storage and rooftop installations—provided by BSES.

The unprecedented demand underscores the strain on Delhi’s electricity infrastructure as more than 20 million residents rely on reliable supply during the prolonged heatwave.
