Deloitte report projects lunar economy value up to $566 billion

A report by Deloitte estimates that a sustained presence on the Moon could generate between US$343 billion and US$566 billion in cumulative economic value through 2050. The analysis distinguishes between conservative and accelerated growth scenarios, noting that while a lunar economy is not guaranteed, it relies on a connected system of transportation, power, communications, and life support.

Certain sectors, such as lunar data and national security services, may develop early as they do not require full infrastructure to be established. Conversely, markets like lunar propellant, helium-3 extraction, and space-based computing are dependent on emerging technologies and downstream demand.

Currently, the lunar economy is largely driven by public demand. NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative exemplifies this, having awarded 17 contracts for lunar deliveries with a combined maximum value of US$2.6 billion through November 2028. These contracts support services including payload integration, mission operations, and Earth-to-Moon launches.
