Delta Flight 437 diverts to Detroit after captain reports medical emergency

Delta Air Lines Flight 437, a Boeing 757-200 traveling from Los Angeles to Boston, diverted to Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport on Tuesday, August 25, due to a medical emergency involving the captain.

During the flight, which was carrying 147 passengers and crew, the captain informed air traffic control that he was ill and required hospital attention. Air traffic control recordings captured the captain stating, “This is the captain. I am the one who is ill. I’m gonna taxi the jet to the gate, and then I need to go to the hospital.”

The aircraft landed safely in Detroit at approximately 5:30 p.m. local time. The airport's fire department responded to the scene, and the captain was transported to a local hospital. While the specific nature of the illness was not disclosed, reports indicated the captain had been experiencing abdominal pain.

Following the landing, Delta assigned a new crew to the aircraft, allowing the flight to continue to its destination. The plane arrived in Boston at approximately 9:04 p.m., roughly 90 minutes later than originally scheduled. Delta apologized to the passengers for the delay.
